Gus Weber on Doubling Down on Innovation
When we opened the Microsoft New England Research & Development Center in September of 2007, we knew this would be the first of many steps in our journey to build a world class R&D center right here in Massachusetts. Along the way we have met some incredible people who have inspired us to think differently.
When we first met John, Akhil and David in June of last year it was hard not to become instantly inspired by their passion and grand idea of catalyzing a start-up renaissance right here in Boston. Their timing was spot-on, as the region reeling from the effects of the economic downturn needed a new cause to get behind, something to lift our spirits and most importantly lift the sagging economy. After they detailed their plans we knew that this was something special that Microsoft had to participate in.
Why does Microsoft care? Why would we get involved in MassChallenge? It’s simple, actually – it’s a core part of our DNA and since the opening of NERD we have had an ongoing dialogue with the local community about the biggest areas of need and where Microsoft can add the most value. The constant thread in these conversations has centered on the local innovation economy and lack of sustained progress. We have responded to this need by opening NERD as a rallying point for entrepreneurs and technologists, listening to the community and responding by investing in people and programs like MassChallenge.
Today, we’re thrilled to announce that we are expanding NERD and further deepening our community roots. We are leasing and renovating 113,000 sq. ft. of office space at One Cambridge Center in the heart of Kendall Square in order to accommodate our growing R&D presence. This expansion represents our continued commitment and investment in the greater Boston technology ecosystem. You can learn more about our expansion by visiting our NERD blog.
MassChallenge, much like NERD has been on a fantastic journey over the past couple of years – announcing the establishment of their $1 million seed fund, their incubator space in the Boston Innovation District and hosting many events to help rev up the innovation ecosystem in Boston. As we expand our presence at NERD in Kendall Square, we’re proud to be partnered with the MassChallenge and excited about the pivotal role they are playing in growing our innovation economy. I encourage you to learn more about the MassChallenge, and if make sure that you’re ready to enter your start-up by June 11th!
Gus is the Business Development and Community Relations Manager for Microsoft NERD, and serves on the board of the MassChallenge.
