Eligibility Criteria for Judging

MassChallenge Judges are seasoned industry and business experts who want to engage with high-impact, startups. Judges enjoy the first look at new ideas coming out of the ecosystem, and are able to read, hear and comment on the best applications to the accelerator. This is a volunteer, unpaid position.
 

General Eligibility Requirements:

  • Entrepreneurs with a demonstrated track record of success (this may include successful exits, significant fundraising, bootstrapping to scale, a long history of startup experiences)
  • Industry-specific professionals with significant early-stage or industry experience (includes Lawyers, Accountants, Marketing Professionals, etc. that are typically Partner/Manager/Director-level and above)
  • General business professionals with significant management experience (includes sales, business development, business management, etc.)
  • Investors (includes angel investors, venture capitalists,s and/or corporate venture professionals director level and above)
  • Technical Experts & University Experts with specific, topical expertise or academic credentials relevant to their field (includes professors, lecturers and researchers)
  • Consultants with employment at reputable firm or self-employed with track record of work at reputable firms
     

In-Person Judging Eligibility Requirements:
Eligibility to participate as a Round 2 and Pre-Final Judge is selective and based on expertise requirements that align with the composition of the finalist class. Due to a limited number of industry-specific judging panels, we may not be able to accommodate your participation in this year’s Pre-Final Judging. Some general requirements to participate in Pre-Final Judging are listed below. 

  • 2+ years of active participation as a MassChallenge mentor
  • 3+ years of active participation as a MassChallenge speaker or expert
  • Industry expertise that aligns with the current composition of the current MassChallenge finalist class
     

Commitment
Judging at MassChallenge is a serious commitment of time and energy. Round 1 judging takes place on online and Round 2 judging takes place in person. Semi-Final judging occurs at the end of the accelerator and determines the winners. You must participate in Round 1 judging to be considered for Round 2 or later judging.

Judging Timeline

Round 1 Judging

  • Online - Judges will read and rate 2 page executive summaries (applications) online
  • Judges provide at least 30 words of written feedback on each application
  • Each judge is expected to read at least 10 applications
  • Judges may commit to read 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 or more applications
  • Based on prior years’ experience, each batch of 10 applications may require between 2-3 hours to complete

Round 2 Judging

  • In person at MassChallenge- Each participating judge may sign up for one or more 4-hour sessions (morning or afternoon)
  • Each judge will review 7-8 teams per 4-hour session
  • Each team will have 20 minutes to present (10 min presentation, 10 min Q&A)
  • Round 2 judges must have participated in Round 1 (online) judging
  • Round 2 judges will be invited and confirmed once the demographics of the entrant pool and judging needs have been determined

Pre-Final Judging

  • In person at MassChallenge- Each participating judge may sign up for one or more 4-hour sessions (morning or afternoon)
  • Each judge will review 3-5 teams per 4-hour session
  • Each team will have 20 minutes to present (10 min presentation, 10 min Q&A)
  • Pre-Final judges must have participated in Round 1 (online) judging & Round 2 judging
  • Pre-Final judges will be invited and confirmed once the demographics of the entrant pool and judging needs have been determined
