2017 Boston Diamond Winner

Off Grid Box is a modular and compact unit that provides renewable energy and treated water in remote areas. We saw that one unit, managed by a local women co-op in a Rwandese village, impacts 1500 people providing Tier 1 electricity and sterilized water with a 20c$/d per family on a Pay-As-You-Go basis (half the current rate).
In less than 2 years, we sold 28 units in 8 Countries to individuals and NGOs.
Add-ons are desalination, wind, and connectivity.

Renovagen have developed the "Roll-Array" transportable solar power system. It's a solar farm which unrolls from a container or trailer in a few minutes - to power mobile hospitals, desalination plants, mine sites, military bases and more. Batteries and inverters are built-in for 24/7 power - it can be used just like a genset. Our air-pallet container can be flown anywhere in the world on normal aircraft and packs up to 18kW of PV - 10x more power and much faster setup than existing solutions.

Did you know that 1 million children die needlessly every single year due to being born prematurely? What if I told you that according to the WHO 75% of these deaths could be prevented with simple treatments such as incubation. Current incubators are incredibly large, needlessly complicated and expensive. MOM is an inflatable incubator, created to dramatically decrease the size of traditional incubators whilst being available at 1/30th of the cost and retaining all the necessary features.

SHRI works alongside communities in rural India to increase access to essential health infrastructure by providing access to toilets, which convert waste into energy in order to run a water filtration system. SHRI sells safe drinking water at a fair price to generate revenue. SHRI encourages behavior change and positive health outcomes through education. Partnerships with local government ensures land and funding allocated for ending open defecation goes to those most in need of these services.

200 million people across India and Bangladesh suffer from arsenic and fluoride poisoning due to contaminated drinking water. Drinkwell transforms this $2.3B market into economic opportunity by blending novel water filtration with a franchise business model to provide 20L jugs of water daily to customers for a low monthly fee. Compared to reverse osmosis, the current best practice, Drinkwell delivers 60x more water, is 16x more energy efficient, and reduces waste by 7 orders of magnitude.

What if I told you I could save one million lives every year with just refrigerator magnets and a laser pointer? For the 500 million annual infections that go undiagnosed, current malaria diagnostics are slow, expensive, inaccurate, and chemical-based, meaning they require refrigeration and clinical expertise.
But malaria parasites are magnetic. Our reusable, mechanical mechanical device offers a handheld, quantitative diagnosis for 1/10th the cost and 100x the detection level of competitors.

Y2Y is building a network of student run homeless shelters for young adults ages 18-24. Young adults are uniquely vulnerable on the streets due to high rates of LGBTQ identity and experience in foster care. Y2Y provides sanctuary to move guests quickly off the streets, surrounding them with resources to facilitate their pathways out of homelessness. Y2Y provides opportunities for guests and volunteers to become the next generation’s leading advocates for youth-driven solutions to homelessness.

Totolines is a snack based on corn flour and "chapulin" designed for customers concerned about the environment, boosting the local economy and looking to enjoy a nutritious snack. A portion of Totolines provides the same amount of protein as a portion of tuna, it has no additives and it's a sustainable source of protein. Insects are up to 12 times more efficient than cows.
Totolines is created by two food technologists that aim to boost the consumption of insects providing quality products.

Adolescent girls globally face many health-related challenges, including inadequate nutrition and anemia, menstruation-related taboos, mental illness, gender-based violence, and teen pregnancy. Adolescence is a critical point of intervention to prevent poor health outcomes later, as these girls are on the cusp of womanhood. Girls Health Champions aims to train adolescent girls in these critical topics and cultivate peer educators who will become health leaders in their schools and communities.

ALS and other "Locked in" patients represent a subgroup of people with fully functional cognitive abilities who gradually lose their ability to speak and the ability to use their upper limbs.
The existing communication means are very expensive, cumbersome to calibrate, require a screen, and most of all, they are not fully mobile.
EyeControl is an affordable, mobile and easy to use communication device, that will unlock ALS and other "locked in" patients worldwide.

Donor breast milk (DBM) is used to enhance the chances of survival and long-term health of sick and premature babies who have no access to maternal milk. There is currently a lack of equitable access to DBM across the UK. The HMB will also establish a first-of-its-kind research biobank to enable novel studies, collaborating with scientists across nutritional analysis, cancer research, microbiomics, and optimal donor milk usage. Surplus revenue will support local perinatal services.

Obz Design is addressing the critical challenge of anemia diagnostics with a revolutionary non-invasive device that will replace blood testing. Our solution is 50 times less expensive, 400 times faster, and safer for patients.

ii) the industry is dominated by foreign companies who do not tailor products for local ingredients; meanwhile Mexican foods such as avocado, amaranth & chia are increasingly recognized abroad for their nutritional value, many labeled as “Superfoods”

So we created the 1st locally-inspired, all-natural Mexican baby food company.

There is a disconnection between the current offer and the huge demand. High prices, poor service, and outdated delivery to a digital generation. Our service starts with optometrists who arrive at people’s doorsteps. We offer the entire range of products, with 48hr delivery, fair prices, 9.3 NPS quality service, and an online visual profile.

Women in India have to walk miles to protect their dignity while relieving themselves. Girls usually drop-out of the school without a well-functioning toilet and similar is the story of over 800 Million Indians, mostly women. To combat this, SUKRITI has designed a smart prefab toilet cabin which depends very little on manual intervention for maintenance. It is automated for self-cleaning & self- maintenance, consumes 90% less fresh water, treats and reuses the waste on-site, and works on solar.

UrSure Inc. aims to prevent HIV by driving adherence to the drug, PrEP. If taken daily, PrEP is 99% effective at preventing HIV infections in non-infected individuals. Nationwide, PrEP adherence is estimated between 20 and 50%, but UrSure Inc. has driven adherence to over 70% in its HIV prevention clinic in Philadelphia through its urine tests. UrSure’s urine tests are noninvasive and painless, cheaper, more accurate, and have a faster turnaround time than alternative PrEP tests.

We developed a 5 minute and $1 diagnostic technology for infectious diseases that allows health data collection and analysis in real time for disease surveillance, using big data algorithms to help decision makers to create strategies for disease control.

Prevention is near impossible as drugs are tasteless and invisible in drinks, thus the only current defense is constant vigilance over one's drink or bringing socially awkward drug tests that are impractical, onerous and ineffective. DrinkSavvy can eliminate the risk of date rape in establishments that use our safe and constantly self-monitoring drinking cup, glass or straw/stirrer that immediately changes color if one’s drink is “roofied”.
