2017 Mexico Diamond Winner

We are a social enterprise whose mission is to catalyze grow through solar energy.
Just in Mexico, more than 500 thousand households located in rural communities are still using expensive, environmentally damaging and unsafe solutions to have a light at night. Our solution is simple: change those sources for renewable energy SHS and provide better quality illumination with an inclusive financial scheme that helps us to achieve our vision for all Mexicans to have electricity by 2025.

2015 UK Diamond Winner

Renovagen have developed the "Roll-Array" transportable solar power system. It's a solar farm which unrolls from a container or trailer in a few minutes - to power mobile hospitals, desalination plants, mine sites, military bases and more. Batteries and inverters are built-in for 24/7 power - it can be used just like a genset. Our air-pallet container can be flown anywhere in the world on normal aircraft and packs up to 18kW of PV - 10x more power and much faster setup than existing solutions.

SHRI works alongside communities in rural India to increase access to essential health infrastructure by providing access to toilets, which convert waste into energy in order to run a water filtration system. SHRI sells safe drinking water at a fair price to generate revenue. SHRI encourages behavior change and positive health outcomes through education. Partnerships with local government ensures land and funding allocated for ending open defecation goes to those most in need of these services.

2017 Switzerland Gold Winner

Novel membranes (PCT, USA patent) for separating hydrogen and oxygen during hydrogen production in alkaline water electrolysers have been developed by a start-up company MEMBRASENZ GmbH. Taking into account the relevance of hydrogen as a future energy career in providing green energy supply for industrial and domestic use and mobility applications, this technology possesses the potential to contribute solving some of the future energy challenges.

Dechets a l'Or is a tech-enabled provider of infrastructure services to fast growing cities of West African. We use a proprietary database system to enable city mapping to support service delivery to households and businesses. We collect and process solid waste to produce, fertilizer, energy, and electricity. Dechets a l’Or uses technology to provide better waste collection service, our mission is to make cities cleaner places with brighter futures through professional service delivery.

2014 Boston Gold Winner

Power plants have been stuck using the same inefficient condensers for decades. Putting a hydrophobic coating on these condensers would save millions of dollars in fuel and thousands of tons of CO2 every year for each power plant. Until now there hasn’t been a coating that survives long enough while providing good thermal performance. We invented and patented a durable hydrophobic coating at MIT and invented a way to manufacture it at an industrial scale.

UPower is developing the only always-on, mobile, emission-free, recyclable nuclear generator for remote and distributed generation where energy costs can exceed 30 cents/kWh, and power is needed 24/7. The reactor is a compact, solid-state, nano reactor that produces 1.5 MWe and can cogenerate process heat for 30 years without refueling. Our unique technology enables us to reduce technical and regulatory risks so we can get to market for 1/10th the cost in half the time as competing technologies.

Fouling - deposition of ash on surfaces of boilers affects coal and biofuel powered power plants. Deposits reduce energy transfer from the combustion fuel to heated water and steam. In a typical base load boiler losses due to fouling top 5%, $25 million annually. Today there is no fouling sensing technology to direct cleaning of the boiler, driving up maintenance costs and inefficiencies. Our technology can directly measure the fouling buildup and create a close loop to optimize cleaning.

Dynamo Micropower is developing a small gas generator (<30 kW) that provides the operational benefits of a gas turbine and the capital costs of traditional diesel gensets. This is achieved by leveraging a novel proprietary architecture that can utilize fuels on site, requires little maintenance and as designed for scale manufacturing. These unique features will allow Dynamo to dominate the market, while the novel architecture enables low cost production and scalable design.

We use a scaleable community-owned business model to leverage energy provision as a catalyst for socio-economic development to alleviate poverty, empower women and tackle climate change.
