On June 24, MassChallenge HQ in Boston transformed into a launchpad for next-gen defense innovation. The 2025 Air Force Labs Finale Showcase convened 12 bold startups and 50 leaders from the U.S. Air Force, government, and industry for a high-energy evening that redefined what’s possible at the intersection of commercial tech and national defense.
This wasn’t just a showcase event, it was a catalyst for collaboration, co-creation, and connection.
Empowering Dual-Use Startups to Meet Mission-Critical Needs
At its core, the Air Force Labs Accelerator helps startups bridge commercial success and defense readiness. Run by MassChallenge in partnership with Hanscom Air Force Base, AFLCMC, AFWERX, and key directorates, the program supports small businesses developing dual-use technologies creating innovative solutions to meet the needs of the Air Force.
For the 2025 cohort, that meant tackling complex challenges like counter-UAS, sensor and autonomous tech, secure communications, and aerial networking.
Finale Highlights:
- 10 Startup Pitches addressing real defense use cases
- Direct engagement between founders and military end-users
- Collaborative conversations that sparked new pilots and partnerships
Meet the Startups: Trailblazers in Dual-Use Tech
Each startup selected for the cohort brought a validated solution and real traction:
- AirShare: Delivered a 95% effective kinetic interceptor to neutralize drones—at 25% of the current cost.
- Circle Optics: Engineered stitch-free 360° camera tech for panoramic precision in surveillance and robotics.
- Trabus Technologies: Combined AI and wireless innovation to boost secure global communications.
- SpaceRake: Developed miniaturized lasercom terminals for jam-resistant networking across domains.

Beyond the Pitch: Building Bridges Between Innovators and End-Users
What makes the Air Force Labs program unique is its focus on early, meaningful engagement between startups and end-users—crucial for those targeting Direct to Phase II (D2P2) SBIR opportunities. MassChallenge not only facilitates these connections but also provides tailored support to help startups shape their approach, align with mission needs, and actively pursue SIBR/STTR awards. Rather than navigating procurement alone, startups gain direct insight into Air Force needs and how to navigate complex acquisition pathways.
This year’s showcase brought those connections to life, with key stakeholders in attendance from:
- Hanscom Air Force Base
- AFLCMC and AFWERX
- Cyber & Networks and Electronic Systems Directorates
- Industry primes and innovation-focused investors
From technical debriefs to procurement interest, the evening served as a launching point for future collaborations.
Why This Matters
Dual-use innovation isn’t a buzzword, it’s a strategy. And for startups, it means unlocking powerful markets while solving real-world defense and security challenges. Programs like Air Force Labs provide access, alignment, and acceleration.
Whether you’re a founder building tech with defense potential, or an innovation leader exploring new partnerships, the impact is clear: early engagement leads to enduring innovation.
