How One Founder Is Creating a Transparent, Ethical Future for Cocoa Supply Chains
Dr. Kristy Leissle is on a mission to transform how the world sources one of its most beloved treats: chocolate.
As the founder and CEO of African Cocoa Marketplace (ACM), Dr. Leissle is connecting the people who grow cocoa in Africa with the global businesses and ultimately, the chocolate lovers who enjoy the final product. Operating from Johannesburg, South Africa, with a team distributed across West Africa, ACM is solving a massive challenge at the heart of the global supply chain.
The Challenge: A Broken, Invisible Supply Chain
More than 70% of the world’s cocoa originates in Africa, yet few people know the stories of the farmers behind their chocolate bars.
“There’s a massive disconnect between where cocoa is grown and where chocolate is consumed,” says Dr. Leissle. “The information about how cocoa is grown, who grows it, and under what conditions it all gets lost in the complexity of the global supply chain.”
This invisibility doesn’t just obscure stories it impacts value, ethics, and sustainability. Without transparency, chocolate companies and consumers have little insight into the practices at origin, leaving producers with fewer tools to prove quality or ensure fair treatment.
The Solution: Certified Transparency + Direct Trade
ACM is introducing a new kind of certification model similar to Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance that goes deeper.
“We certify cocoa sellers based on their values, practices, and business capacity,” explains Dr. Leissle. “Then we make that information accessible to buyers who want to know exactly where their cocoa is coming from.”
This isn’t just about ethics it’s a business opportunity. Chocolate brands want to differentiate in a competitive market, and today’s consumers increasingly demand traceability.
To scale the impact, ACM is also building an online marketplace that will enable direct trades between African cocoa producers and global buyers cutting out intermediaries and elevating both transparency and profits for producers.
Where They Are Now: From Pilot to Platform
ACM is currently in its early stages, piloting its first cocoa trade from West Africa to international buyers. It’s a pivotal moment for the company, as it tests the infrastructure and relationships that will power its long-term model.
“Our first trade facilitation is in motion now, and it’s a huge step forward,” says Dr. Leissle. “Next up: scale.”
Why MassChallenge: A Human-Centered Approach to Climate and Innovation
Dr. Leissle joined the MassChallenge ClimateTech program to accelerate her company’s mission and she’s found more than just business support.
“It’s been incredibly moving to be part of this community,” she shares. “From the very first meeting, I felt encouraged to bring my full self not just my startup pitch, but my hopes, fears, and values as a founder.”
The experience has been a powerful reminder that business transformation starts with human connection.
Looking Ahead
With global demand for ethical and traceable cocoa rising, ACM is poised to lead a new era of responsible sourcing where chocolate doesn’t just taste good, it feels right too.
“We believe in a future where cocoa farmers are seen, valued, and empowered,” says Dr. Leissle. “And we’re building the technology and trust to make that future possible.”
