How DCU is Driving Real-World Innovation Through the MassChallenge Partnership

Corporate innovation doesn’t happen in a vacuum, and at Digital Federal Credit Union (DCU), it’s happening through collaboration. As a returning corporate partner with MassChallenge, DCU is tapping into startup innovation to solve real-world financial services challenges – from preventing elder fraud to scaling personalized digital experiences.

Building Innovation Into the Business

Sue Burton, who leads Member Experience at DCU, emphasizes that the partnership with MassChallenge has been transformational. “This is our second year in the program, and this year we have three challenges,” she explained. By engaging directly with startups through those targeted innovation challenges, DCU is applying entrepreneurial thinking to longstanding institutional problems.

Learning by Doing, Together

Why partner with a startup accelerator like MassChallenge? According to Burton, it’s all about action. “MassChallenge gives us an incredible opportunity to learn by doing, and by collaborating with some of the great minds that are out there doing inventive things.” That collaboration goes beyond brainstorming. It’s about applying innovative technologies to real DCU use cases.

Real Outcomes, Real Impact

Through the partnership, DCU is building capabilities that are helping the organization grow on multiple fronts. One key area is digital member engagement. “We’re creating a way to connect with our members in a digital-first way and have values-based conversations that help them identify the next best product or opportunity,” said Burton.

DCU is also leveraging data to tackle fraud in new ways. For instance, they’ve launched challenges to explore predictive behavior patterns, such as whether missed utility payments could signal loan delinquency risk. “Another opportunity for us is in the area of preventing elder fraud,” she added, “and creating constellations of caregivers to manage their finances in a way that preserves elder autonomy.”

Why the Cohort Model Works

By design, MassChallenge’s cohort-based model fuels focused collaboration. “It really applies focus and energy in a concentrated window of time,” said Burton. With three internal cohorts tackling challenges simultaneously, DCU teams are not only solving problems; they’re learning from each other. “It’s like an agile sprint,” she explained.

Matching Startups to Strategic Needs

DCU once ran its own fintech accelerator. What’s different now? “This starts with the challenge first,” said Burton. “It’s a challenge we have in our business. FinTech partners are working towards solving [it].” That alignment – from problem to partner – makes it easier to generate meaningful solutions in just 12 weeks.

From Pilots to Scaled Innovation

The value doesn’t stop when the challenge ends. “We have ambassadors around our organization who can speak to the benefits of working with these partners,” said Burton. That internal knowledge transfer accelerates adoption and helps ideas scale faster.

For startups, the experience is equally valuable. “Our teams are mentors,” she explained, “but a lot of these fintech partners have the opportunity to apply a concept they have developed in a real-world scenario.” The result is true co-creation, where both DCU and startups walk away with stronger products and capabilities.

A Model for Future Growth

Through the MassChallenge partnership, DCU has created a repeatable model for innovation. “So often we have found innovations difficult to mainstream,” said Burton. “This provides a model to incubate, apply towards a challenge, and then it becomes all the easier to ingest and immediately deploy.”

In an age of technological disruption, DCU sees this model as critical to staying ahead. “We are in one of the most disruptive periods in technology and data science ever,” she said. Partnering with startups provides a low-risk environment to test and scale transformative ideas, without putting the core business at risk.

Why It Matters

If you’re a corporate innovation leader seeking results, DCU’s story offers a clear takeaway: partnering with startups through challenge-led accelerators like MassChallenge drives measurable impact. Whether it’s unlocking insights from data, accelerating digital engagement, or building internal innovation capacity, the benefits are tangible.
