How Spacerake Is Revolutionizing Battlefield and Satellite Communications with Laser Tech

A New Era in Communications Infrastructure

In a world where resilient, high-bandwidth communication is mission-critical, especially in conflict zones and low-earth orbit, Spacerake is bringing a groundbreaking solution to the table: miniaturized laser communications that fit on almost any platform, from drones to satellites.

“We’re building lasers so compact they can fit on almost any type of system,” said Weston Marlow, co-founder and CEO. “This is crucial for the future of communications as the world shifts to billions of connected devices and the RF spectrum becomes increasingly congested.”

The challenge of resilient data transmission, particularly in contested environments, is escalating. Spacerake’s innovation enables operators to sidestep radio frequency congestion entirely by switching to laser-based infrastructure that’s faster, more secure, and far more energy-efficient.

From Software Origins to Hardware Breakthroughs

Spacerake didn’t always plan to build hardware. The company initially launched as a space observation software venture. But as AI models and satellite data services became increasingly crowded and capital-intensive, the team leaned into its deep experience in aerospace hardware to pursue a new path.

The pivot paid off.

They began spinning out tech from MIT, focusing on miniaturized laser terminals and eventually discovered that their tech, while space-grade, had massive implications for defense and ground-based systems as well.

Why It Matters: Communication in Crisis

While space may have birthed the idea, ground-based use cases accelerated Spacerake’s mission.

“Conflicts like Ukraine made it painfully clear that communications infrastructure can’t rely on fiber alone,” Marlow shared. “Our tech is now the smallest laser comms system in the world, and it can be deployed on vehicles, UAVs, and mobile units, getting bandwidth into environments where it’s desperately needed.”

For military and disaster response teams operating in rugged or congested environments, Spacerake’s terminals offer a way to move more data, faster, with fewer risks and greater flexibility.

The Tech: Small, Scalable, Strategic

At the core of Spacerake’s innovation is a “SWaP-optimized” laser communication system, short for size, weight, and power.

In an era of proliferated satellite networks and low-cost drone fleets, the ability to add reliable comms without increasing payload is game-changing.

“You can now fit an iPhone-sized sensor on a satellite the size of your hand,” Marlow explained. “But getting that data off the satellite, or a drone, requires something just as compact. That’s where we come in.”

Laser tech also avoids the increasingly saturated frequency spectrum, enabling faster, more secure data transmission with lower power draw.

Spacerake + MassChallenge: From Pitch to Partner Conversations

Participating in MassChallenge’s Air Force-focused program has been pivotal to Spacerake’s traction.

“The team has been fantastic; supportive, but also not afraid to give critical feedback,” said Marlow. “That kind of feedback helps refine how we pitch, how we think, and how we tell our story.”

The program has opened doors into the Air Force and Space Force ecosystems—Spacerake’s target markets. From refining their messaging to making direct connections at Hanscom AFB and beyond, MassChallenge helped Spacerake gain both visibility and credibility.

“It’s allowed us to deepen conversations we had already started and open doors we couldn’t have reached alone.”

What’s Next: From Niche to Norm

Spacerake is poised to redefine how the world views laser communications.

“When we’ve done our job right, lasers will be as boring and ubiquitous as radios,” said Marlow. “Right now, people see them as exotic or fragile. But once we bring the cost down and increase availability, they’ll be everywhere, from drones to critical infrastructure.”

The team is actively building out its product roadmap and scaling production to meet growing demand in both defense and commercial sectors.

And while communications may not be the flashiest sector, its impact is undeniable.

“It may not be sexy,” Marlow noted, “but it’s essential. Especially as we move toward a future with 5G, 6G, and quantum-grade networks, laser systems will be fundamental.”

Founder Philosophy: Build the Right Tech—and the Right Team

For Marlow, building a startup is about more than cutting-edge tech. It is also about culture.

“As a founder, I lead with empathy,” he shared. “If you don’t understand your people first, you don’t have a company. That’s something I’ll carry forward no matter how much we grow.”

This people-first approach is embedded in Spacerake’s DNA, ensuring the company builds not only resilient tech, but a resilient team
