Tintte Is Rewriting the Future of Fashion, One Bacteria-Based Color at a Time

How Tintte Is Making Textile Dyeing Sustainable, Biodegradable, and Beautiful

The fashion industry has a pollution problem. It’s the second most polluting industry in the world, with textile dyeing alone accounting for nearly 20% of global industrial water pollution. But one startup is determined to make fashion as sustainable as it is stylish, by rethinking how we color our clothes.

Meet Tintte, a ClimateTech startup co-founded by Magali Mendez, and a recent participant in the MassChallenge Climate cohort.

“We are developing sustainable, biodegradable colorants made out of bacteria,” Magali explains. “Our goal is to reduce the environmental impact of the textile and fashion industry.”

By replacing toxic synthetic dyes with naturally derived, bacteria-based pigments, Tintte offers a cleaner, greener alternative for fashion brands looking to align with circularity, regulation, and consumer demand for sustainability.

The Problem: Synthetic Dyes Are Dirty Business

Traditional textile dyes are made from petrochemicals, require vast amounts of water, and often end up in rivers, harming both ecosystems and communities. In fast fashion’s race to market, sustainability is often sacrificed, especially at the coloring stage.

“We knew we had to address the root of the issue,” says Magali. “If we want truly sustainable clothing, we have to start at the molecular level, by replacing the materials we use from the beginning.”

The Solution: Living Color, Grown Sustainably

Tintte’s proprietary process cultivates colorants using bacteria, creating vibrant, durable pigments that are:

  • Biodegradable
  • Non-toxic
  • Water-efficient
  • Scalable for industrial use

This isn’t just science, it’s market-ready climate innovation. As brands face pressure from regulators and consumers to cut emissions and clean up their supply chains, Tintte’s solution offers both environmental and economic upside.

MassChallenge Impact: Mentorship that Moves the Needle

Magali credits the MassChallenge ClimateTech program with helping the team refine their strategy and accelerate industry connections.

“The mentors have been amazing. They’re not only helping us redesign our go-to-market strategy, they’re also providing opportunities to meet investors and potential industry partners,” she says.

Those tailored connections are already reshaping how Tintte approaches commercialization, marketing, and fundraising.
