Michael Langer is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of T.Rx Capital, a fund that invests in the creation, seed, and Series A stages at the intersection of biology and technology. Although T.Rx Capital is still in stealth mode, it promises to be a significant player in its field upon its public launch. Langer’s career has been marked by a series of influential roles in both startups and established companies. He founded Old Silver VC, a family investment firm focusing on healthcare and deep tech, which invested in over 20 companies including Big Hat Biosciences and Opentrons. His previous roles include Head of Search, Evaluation & In-licensing at Pear Therapeutics and positions at Akili Interactive Labs, Udacity, Modern Meadow, Polaris Partners, and Boston Seed Capital.
Early Connection with MassChallenge
Langer’s connection with MassChallenge dates back to his early career. “When I was 23, I interned for Polaris Partners and the Harvard Experiment Fund,” Langer recalls. “There I really learned about the innovation ecosystem of Boston. At the time, MassChallenge was just ramping up.” He spent time getting to know key figures in the organization, like its founder John Harthorne and key leader Scott Bailey. Langer served as a mentor and judge for MassChallenge applications over the years.
A Philanthropic Vision
Beyond his professional achievements, Langer is deeply involved in the nonprofit sector. He serves on the Leadership Board at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Leadership Board at the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation, and is the Senior Advisor of Special Projects at the Galenus Foundation. His philanthropic endeavors also include co-founding the Young Coder’s Society, which teaches children how to code using Raspberry Pi’s, and serving on the Board of Advisors at the Museum of Science.
Joining the MassChallenge board was a natural progression for Langer, driven by his philanthropic vision and commitment to supporting innovation. “Philanthropically, I’ve been on the board of the Museum of Science and the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation, but I was still quite interested in something more entrepreneurial,” Langer explains. His admiration for MassChallenge grew over the years as he got to know its founder, John Harthorne, and current CEO, Cait Brumme.

It helps everyone, including lesser-advantaged founders, have better access to have those mentors, resources, and networks.”

He sees opportunities for more companies, especially in biotech, to thrive without the need for massive funding rounds. “Now labs are cheaper, and you can have people in their twenties and thirties spearheading projects that can change the game,” Langer notes.
